Information Technology Management Essay Information and communication technologies play critical roles in sustaining an organizations growth and profitability (Galliers Leidner, 2003). If managed properly, investments in information and communication technologies can improve efficiency and effectiveness of business processes and an organization’s competitive posture in the market. Proper management of information and communication technologies investments can also enrich people’s lives in the organization improving job satisfaction and productivity. Galliers Leidner, 2003). Success in managing information and communication investments depend largely on exercising good management practices like human capital management, staff training management, information technology architecture management and software management (Galliers Leidner, 2003). However, with all the potential benefits of investments in information and communication projects, they can be risky, costly and unproductive if not managed properly (Galliers Leidner, 2003). Organizations should therefore strive to attract and retain information technology personnel that are qualified and talented to ensure the success of information and technology investments. This is further complicated by a tight information and technology labor market where qualified information and technology personnel enjoy high mobility. Discussion The position I am required to design is a leadership position intended to provide technical direction and guide an organization in implementing strategic information and communication projects (Food and Agriculture organization of the United Nations, 2010). The occupant of this position is expected to be able to handle a wide range of duties and responsibilities. He or she should be able to use his/ her exposure, technical experience and business knowledge in developing an organization’s technical plans and to advise senior management on information technology strategies, standards and governance (Galliers Leidner, 2003). In addition he or she will be expected to monitor the industry’s trends in information technology and respond appropriately by formulating long term information technology strategies capable of improving an organization’s competitiveness. The senior information technology manager will work under the general supervision of the chief executive officer. In line with work plans and resource allocation coordination provided by the chief executive officer, he or she will be responsible for effective planning, supervision and delivery of assigned functions that fall within an information and communication department (Food and Agriculture organization of the United Nations, 2010) so as to ensure that an organization’s requirements for information systems and information technology are effectively and efficiently met. He will also be responsibility for ensuring that an organization’s computer systems have the capacity to meet the business needs of an organization by either upgrading existing systems or developing new systems (Info Tech Employment, 2008). Additional functions will include participation in planning, coordinating and setting policies for the development and implementation of an organization’s information technology strategies, supporting standards, procedures and practices, supervising and coordinating works of external firms in special projects or functions to ensure quality and timely delivery, providing consultant services in regards to procurement of new information technology equipments and computer systems, supervising members of staff assigned to special projects or functions and coordinating their training and development to ensure that they are up to the tasks and finally, developing and monitoring key performance indicators of assigned functions within an information technology department (Food and Agriculture organization of the United Nations, 2010). The senior information technology manager is expected to have an excellent working knowledge in information technology and a commitment to keep up to dat e with the latest development (Galliers Leidner, 2003). He should demonstrate people’s management skills with an ability to motivate staff members, provide a cooperative and productive work environment, manage resources effectively to achieve objectives, organize and coordinate work in the department and explain technical issues clearly (Info Tech Employment, 2008). He or she will be tasked with leading changes that fall within the information technology department, hence must be able to integrate organizational and departmental goals, priorities and values. In addition, he or she should have experience in managing large scale projects in information systems and technology (Food and Agriculture organization of the United Nations, 2010). To fulfill these expectations, a university degree in computer science or related fields and appropriate professional certifications are mandatory. Moreover, the candidate of choice should have at least five years management experience in information technology. He should demonstrate experience with standard software applications and data manipulation, analysis and interpretation tools (Food and Agriculture organization of the United Nations, 2010). Conclusion Information technology investments can be very beneficial to an organization as a whole if they are managed properly. Organizations should therefore strive to hire and retain qualified, experienced and talented information technology managers. This is not easy given the current information technology labor market. The labor market is characterized by high mobility of qualified labor and organizations must put in place effective measures to ensure they hire the right people. One of the measures an organization should take is defining clear structures and responsibilities of all employees in the information technology department. The senior information technology manager will provide technical direction and guidance to the organization in implementing strategic information technology projects. He will be responsible for ensuring effective and efficient management of resources within the information technology department.

Dialectic Journal for Catcher in the Rye Essay Entry One Quote: â€Å" and all that David Copperfield kind of crap but I don’t feel like going through it if you want to know the truth my parents would have about two hemorrhages a piece it I tell anything pretty personal about them.† (Page 1) Response: This excerpt makes me very curious about his family members. The tone makes me believe that Holden probably is ashamed by them or he doesn’t like them when he describes them as â€Å"crap†. His parents’ attitude toward telling others personal stories is also confusing. It is not clear whether they are the ones inhibiting Holden from telling or not. I predict that Holden is reluctant when it comes to uncovering truths about his life. This quote is important because it gives me background information into Holden’s family life, as well as revealing a variety of characteristics of his personality. From this quote, I could tell that Holden does not have motivation to excel in school and he does not seem to care about getting kicked out. Being the teenager that he is, Holden does not realize the importance of education in his life, thus not caring about the severe consequences. Entry Two Quote: â€Å"He said he talked to Jesus all the time, even when he was driving his car. That killed me. I can just see the big phony bastard shifting into first gear and asking Jesus to send him more shifts.† (Page 17) Response: The quote made me really confused because I do not understand what Holden meant by shifting gear in this passage. However, now I understand that he does not like braggers and fakers. Also, Holden finds it irrational that these people dare to say they follow Jesus. I agree with him. If standing in a parking lot does not make you a car, then going to a church does not mean you are incredibly religious. This also seems to be one sign of Holden’s immaturity. It is very clear that when Holden starts to horse around, he puts an effort into annoying those surrounding him. Entry Three Quote: â€Å"I didn’t care about not seeing the movie anyway Besides, I’d been to the movies before with Auckly and Brossard.† (Page 37) Response: This quote seems ironic to me in ways more than one. Holden normally hates watching movies because he thinks that actors are fake and phony. He also does not like Auckly that much. In this section of the book, Holden does not seem glum and miserable as usual because he is acting like a regular teenager would. Holden’s invitation to Auckly proves that he is caring and sensitive to Auckly’s emotions. He also knows that loneliness is the worst situation so he helps Auckly out of it at least for one night. I also feel as if Holden really did care about seeing the movie because of the tone evolved in his voice. Entry Four Quote: â€Å"He got leukemia and died when we were up in Maine, on July 18, 1946. You’d have liked him. He was two years younger than I was, but he was about fifty times as intelligent. He was terrifically intelligent.† (Page 49) Response: This quote seemed very significant to me. It informed me that Holden had a younger brother named Allie who died from Leukemia. It is extremely clear that when Holden thinks about Allie, all he thinks about is how amazing of a person Allie was. I get the feeling that Holden is very fond of his siblings and has developed a fantastic relationship with them over time, making the death of Allie a major impact on his life. Also, the way Holden seems to be acting in this scene in the book tells me that he has strong feelings for Jane. The way he is talking about Stradlater has a connotation of evilness and mystery as to why he is afraid about Jane. Holden used to be close friends with Jane and he knows things about her that is worrying him about the intimate relationship she might form with Stradlater. Entry Five Quote: â€Å"I was right away sorry I’d said it, but it was too late.† (Page 75) Response: In my perspective, Holden tells these lies because he is used to it, but every time in the end he feels guilty. I think the fact that Holden feels bad about what he has done makes him a mature young man. He recognizes his mistakes and recognizes the horrid feeling of telling a lie. Many people in life have had moments where they have said something and regretted it immediately. This is the exact situation in which Holden was in. Holden had just had one of those relatable moments involving the guilt from saying something harsh and how it immediately affects him. However, he soon realizes that it is unfortunately too late to take back the words he had said. Entry Six Quote: â€Å"The fish-that’s different. The fish is different. I’m talking about the ducks.† (Page 82) Response: In this passage of the book, Holden is thinking scientifically. This supports the fact that he is smart after all, even though he his failing most of his classes. Often times, a teenager wants something so bad, they come up with crazy and somewhat stupid ideas and plans to help them obtain that something. Maybe this is because he does not want to try or maybe he wants to fit in with others who would not accept him if he was smart. In this metaphor, he is comparing himself the ducks in Central Park when the lagoon freezes over. What Holden is really saying is the fact that he would not know where to go if he stays living in a place full of phonies and rude people. The ducks cannot swim in ice and he will not stay in a school full of fakes. Entry Seven Quote: â€Å"She hasn’t felt too healthy since my brother Allie dies. She’s very nervous. That’s another reason why I hated like hell for her to know I got the ax again.† (Page 140) Response: This quote clearly explains how Holden is definitely not the only one who is affected by his brother, Allie’s, death. Holdens mother has gained severe health problems ever since Allie passed away. His mother is also very nervous, and I have come to conclusion that this is probably because she is afraid to lose another child of her own. However, not matter what her reason, Holden is concerned about his mother, and he feels saddened and guilty that his problems will affect her. This seems to be one of the real reasons as to why he does not want his parents, especially his mother, to know about him getting kicked out of school once again. I can relate to Holden in this situation in the fact that there is much pain and struggle that goes on within a family when a tragedy happens. Entry Eight Quote: â€Å"I kept putting my hand over my stomach and all to keep the blood from dripping all over. I didn’t want anybody to know I was wounded. I was concealing the fact that I was a wounded sunuvabitch.† (Page 150) Response: Back in the hotel when Holden caught himself into a fight and became the punching bag for the elevator guy, he pretended to be shot in the stomach. It is worth noting that Holden does the same thing now. I will infer that Holden may have seen this played out in a movie and such a scene became imprinted in his head. Also, this passage is extremely symbolic as to how Holden is feeling. It is very clean that Holden has a ton of issues that are depressing him but he is not showing that among others. I feel as though if Holden received help from a therapist or even a loved one he could excel in life and not have to live in such a tremendous lie anymore. In this depressed state, Holden is looking for much comfort. In some ways Holden proves he has much strength, but in other ways he proves he is a weak liar. Entry Nine Quote: â€Å"Then I took my hunting hat from my coat pocket and gave it to her.† (Page 180) Response: In this quote it is clear that Holden feels attached to it because he is able to recognize the connection he has with it. When he puts on the hat, he feels almost outside of himself and feels like there is someone that understands him. He understands himself even if no one else does. He feels safe when he wears it. The hunting hat is very symbolic to Holden. He wears it whenever he wants to feel protected and loved. It is probably the only object he cherishes. Giving that hat to Phoebe is a terrific example of being the catcher in the rye because he was to protect the children from the severity of life. Among those children, his favorite person is Phoebe, and this is why he chose the hand off the hunting hat to her. Entry Ten Quote: â€Å"but this damn article I started reading made me almost worst. It was all about hormones. It describes how you should look, your face and eyes and all, if your hormones were in good shape, and I didn’t look that way at all.† (Page 195) Response: Holden appears to be sad, lonely, and in desperate need of comforting. Unfortunately he decides to turn to alcohol for comfort. This clearly demonstrates how Holden behaves when dealing with certain issues as well as showing another immature side of him. Holden is originally skinny. He was supposed to be on a certain diet to help him gain weight, but he never eats enough. In fact, he rarely mentions food in his whole novel. His body is not receiving the essential nutrition in order for his body to function correctly, and consequently his hormones are not going to form completely. Many organs in his body will not work correctly, this includes his brain. This is scientifically why Holden will wind up in a mental hospital to seek help with his personal issues.

Analysis of Compound 109 using 13C NMR Spectra The 13C NMR spectrum of compound 109-114 is represented in Plate 40-45. Structural elucidation of 109 by 13C NMR spectrum has been described and it was confirmed from the two dimensional NMR reports of 109. Assignments for the other compounds 109-114 made by comparing with compound 109. Table 33 lists the chemical shift values of 109. A collection of signals resonated in the aliphatic region at 20.85, 26.60 and 27.98 ppm of the three signals in the aliphatic region, signals at 20.85, 26.60 and 27.98 ppm are assigned to C-7, C-6 and C-8, respectively. The C-5 signal is merged with solvent signal. In addition to this, the benzylic carbon signals C-2 and C-4 were resonated at 64.53 and 62.52 ppm respectively, whereas the bridgehead carbon C-1 was appeared at 45.69 ppm. Moreover, a collection of signals appeared in the region 102.69-131.40 ppm, which are unambiguously assigned to aryl carbon. A part from the assigned signals, two signals resonated in the downfield at 142.56 and 142.72 pp m is assigned to ipso carbons. Another four unassigned signals resonated in the down field region at 159.55 to 166.27 ppm and these signals belong to C=0, C=N, C-OH carbons respectively. 1H-13C COSY spectra Plate 46 and 47 represents the 1H-13C COSY spectrum of 105 and the correlations showed in Table 34. HMBC (Plate 40) and HSQC (Plate 41) correlations have been used to assign the benzylic carbons, ipso carbons of aryl group, and methylene carbons (C-6, C-7, and C-8). The benzylic protons observed at 4.30 (H-2a) and 4.25 ppm (H-4a) showed cross peak with 64.33 (C-2) and 62.52 ppm (C-4), which may be due to the C-2 and C-4 carbons of the piperidone heterocyclic of the ABN system. The bridgehead methine proton signals at 2.50 (H-1e) and 2.98 (H-5e) ppm was correlated with the carbon signals at 45.69 ppm (C-1) and 39.57 ppm (C-5). This indicates that the signals appeared at 45.69 and 39.57 ppm is unambigously assigned to C-1 and C-5 carbons. Cross peak with the protons resonated at 2.77 (H-7a) and 1.27 (H-7e) ppm was correlated with the carbon signal at 20.85 ppm and this confirms the signal at 20.85 ppm was solely specific to C-7 carbon. H-6a and H-6e protons appeared at 1.45 and 1.60 ppm showed cross peak with 26.60 ppm (C-6 carbon), which confirms that the signal at 26.60 ppm was due to C-6 carbon and the carbon signal at 20.85 ppm was attributed to the corresponding C-7 carbon. Similarly, the H-8e (1.63 ppm) and H-8a (1.55 pm) protons was correlated with the carbon signal at 27.98 ppm (C-8), which suppors that the signal at 27.98 ppm was ascribed to the cyclohexane ring carbon C-8. Analysis of spectra of 109-114 1H and 13C NMR spectral analysis of other compounds such as N-(2,4-bis(4-chlorophenyl)-3-azabicyclo[3.3.1]nonan-9-ylidene)-2,4-dihydro-xybenzohydrazide101, N-(2,4-bis(4-fluorophenyl)-3-azabi-cyclo-[3.3.1]nonan-9-ylidene)-2,4-dihydroxybenzohydrazide 102, N-(2,4-bi-s(4-bromophenyl)-3-azabicyclo[3.3.1]nonan-9-ylidene)-2,4-dihydroxy-benzohydrazide 103, N-(2,4-dip-tolyl-3-azabicyclo[3.3.1] nonan-9-ylidene)-2,4-dihydroxybenzohydrazide 104, N-(2,4-bis(2-chloro-phenyl)-3-azabicyclo[3.3.1]nonan-9-ylidene)-2,4-dihydroxy-benzohy-drazide 105 was analyzed in a similar way of 109. The chemical shift and splitting patterns observed using 1H and 13C NMR assignments for other compounds is presented in Tables 35 and 36 and their corresponding spectra are given in Plates 33-37 41-45, respectively. Tables 37-42 show the brief description of analytical and spectral data of compounds 109-114. Taken together, all the above observations substantiate the proposed structure and twin-chair (CC) conformation o f 2r,4c-diaryl-3-azabicyclo [3.3.1] nonan-9-one-4-methyl-1,2,3-thiadazole-5-carbonyl hydrazones 102-108. Biological study Free radical scavenging activity Intensity of the free radical scavenging potential strongly depends upon its chemical structure. Several studies have demonstrated that the free radical scavenging effects is noticeably influenced by the number and position of hydroxyl groups on the D ring and by the extent of conjugation between the D ring amide carbonyl group [1-4]. The dihydroxy structure in the D ring confers high stability to the hydrazones phenoxyl radical via hydrogen bonding or by electron delocalization. The amide carbonyl group double bond (Conjugation with the amide oxo group) determines the coplanarity of the phenyl ring and participates in radical stabilization via electron delocalization over all ring system [4]. Initial studies on analysis of free radical scavenging potential of diaryl 3-azabicyclononanones revealed a concentration dependent weak anti-radical activity resulting from reduction of DPPH†¢, ABTS†¢+, O†¢Ã¢Ë†â€™, OH†¢, and nitric oxide radicals to their non-radical forms. In order to bring the dihydroxy structure in the D ring and the amide carbonyl group double bond (Conjugation with the amide oxo group) into diaryl 3-azabicyclononanones to enhance the free radical potential (figure 14), We therefore synthesized N-(2,4-diaryl-3-azabicyclo[3.3.1]nonan-9-ylidene)-2,4-dihydroxybenzohydrazide (109-114) by the reaction of 95,96,98-101 with 2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid hydrazide (94) in the presence of acetic acid. All the tested compounds showed a concentration dependent anti-radical activity against various free radicals. IC50 values for the free radical scavenging effects of ascorbic acid and various synthetic compounds (109-114) are shown in Table 43.This may be due to the hydrogen atom donation mechanism and the electron donation mechanism. In the hydrogen atom transfer mechanism, hydroxyl groups donate hydrogen to a radical stabilizing it and giving rise to a relatively stable hydrazones phenoxyl radical. Figure 15 illustrates the probable mechanism of hydrogen atom donating ability of compounds 109-114. The electron donation mechanism involves through the strong hydrogen bond of -OH moiety with the oxygen atom of amide carbonyl group that may prevent efficient deprotonation and enhance their radical scavenging action by means of hydrogen atom donation. Figure 16 illustrates the probable mechanism of free radical scavenging effects of compounds 109-114 through electron donating mechanism. Structure A is the parent neutral molecule of compounds 109-114. Structure B is the initial radical ions and structure C is its more stable tautomeric form. The tautomeric form C of the radical ions results from the initial radical ions B and proton transfer from C-2Ê º -OH to carbonyl groups. We found required structural features to scavenge free radical in our tested compounds (109-144). However, we have noticed a diverse range of effects against various free radicals. This may be due the different substitution at the C-2 and C-6 positions of the azabicyclononan-9-one moiety. Compound 8 devoid of any substituents at the para position of the phenyl groups at the C-2 and C-6 positions of the azabicyclononan-9-one moiety and phenyl rings with electron-donor methyl groups at the para position of compounds 113 showed excellent free radical scavenging effects compared to standard antioxidant ascorbic acid, a known antioxidant used as a positive control. This may be due to incorporation of methyl groups at para position phenyl ring. Several studies have demonstrated that organic molecules incorporating a methyl groups can act as free radical trapping agents and are capable of opposing oxidative challenges [5,6]. Compounds possessing electron-withdrawing chloro (110/114), bromo (111), and fluoro (112), substitutions at the para position of the piperidine moiety showed admirable in vitro free radical scavenging effects against various free radicals. This admirable or less free radical scavenging effects of compounds with bromo, choloro and fluoro substitutions may be due to the electron-withdrawing inductive effect of halogens. The results obtained in the present study are in line with other findings [7,8]. Taken together, the current research suggests that azabicyclononane ring ensuring hydroxyl groups on the D ring and by the extent of conjugation between the D ring amide carbonyl group with strong free scavenging effects (111) may conceivably contribute to its protective effects against free radical-induced oxidative stress and carcinogenesis. Antibacterial and antifungal activity Synthesized compounds 109-114 were examined for their antibacterial and antifungal potencies. In vitro studies by twofold serial dilution method was adopted. Streptomycin/ streptomycin/ fluconazole were used as a positive control. Table 44 shows the MICs of test compounds 109-114. Analysis of in vitro antimicrobial effects of all the N-(2r,4c-diaryl-3-azabicyclo[3.3.1]nonan-9-ylidene)-2,4-dihydroxybenzohydrazide 109-114 revealed a diverse range of (1.56-200  µg/mL) against the various bacterias and fungus. The compounds deprived of any substituents at the aryl rings in 109 hinder the growth of all bacteria and fungus at a MIC value of 100-200 ÃŽ ¼g/mL. However, compounds 110, 111 and 112 possessing para halo (electron withdrawing substitutents chloro, fluoro and bromo) substituted aryl groups in azabicyclononane moiety accounts for the enhanced inhibitory effects against B. subtilis, K. pneumonia, P. aeruginosa, S. aureus, A. flavus, A. Niger, C. albicans, and Candida6 at MIC value s of 1.56-25  µg/mL when compared to the standard antibiotic streptomycin/ fluconazole. Several studies have also documented that electron-withdrawing groups (fluoro, bromo and chloro) substituted azabicyclononan-9-one derivatives exhibited outstanding antibacterial and antifungal activities [9,10]. Compound 114 with ortho chloro substituent in the phenyl moiety displays good antibacterial activity against all pathogens. Other compounds displayed reduced inhibitory effects against various bacterial strains compared to the standard streptomycin/ fluconazole. The results of the present study demonstrates that electron withdrawing groups at the para position of the aromatic ring in azabicyclononan-9-one moiety exert superior inhibitory effect against various tested microbes compared to the other test compounds and standard drug. The SARs based on IC50 values (table 44) showed that variations in substitution of the aryl groups at C-2 and C-4 position of the azabicyclononane ring may have significant impact on the anti-microbial activity against various microbes. Conclusion The chemical condensation of diversely substituted diaryl 3-azabicyclononan-9-ones with 2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid hydrazide in the presence of acetic acid provide corresponding hydrazones 109-114 with increased antioxidant potential and anti-microbial effects. Although various hydrazones exerted the free radical scavenging effets in a good dose-dependent manner, compound 109 and 113 were more active in scavenging free radicals than their parent hydrazones and ascorbic acid. In addition, the results of the antimicrobial activities of hydrazones revealed that compounds 110, 111 and 112 possessing para halo (electron withdrawing substitutents chloro, fluoro and bromo) display promising activities against all tested microorganisms. The results of the present study provide a further insight into the structural requirements to develop potential new antioxidants and anti-microbial agents.

Educational Psychology Inclusion What a society feels about it’s diverse membership, particularly about citizens who are different, is expressed in the institutions of that society. A close look at the major institutions of our society the schools, the legislatures, and the courts should tell us a lot about the place of exceptional children in our society. In the category of exceptional children one would find a list of any and every child that requires education in academic matters as well as life skills. These children must work at things that average society takes for granted. Out of this group of exceptional children has risen a disability that is drawing more and more attention known as Down Syndrome. The obvious reason for Down Syndrome children to come to the forefront is their parents. By this I mean that studies have shown that a couple with two or more college degrees among them are more likely to have a Downs baby then that of a couple of high school drop outs. This odd occurrence has lead to more affluent families to give birth to one or more Downs babies. The limitations facing a Downs child will affect the child’s whole life and it is the environmental circumstances around him that determine how he fares in life. Included in these circumstances are his family and their unity and maybe most importantly his level of education. In our society education plays a big part in all we do and this serves no difference for the Downs child. As we look back in time, we find that the notion of educating every child to achieve his or her greatest potential is a relatively new concept. The current use of the term exceptional is itself a reflection of the radical changes in societies views of people whom differ from the norm. The world has come along way from the Spartans’ practice of killing infants who did not meet their standards of normalcy, but the journey has been slow, moving from neglect and mistreatment, to pity and overprotection and finally to acceptance and integration to the fullest extent possible. The phrase "Acceptance and integration into society to the fullest extent possible† has been the topic of the most heated arguments in education today. The term integration has grown to include such devices as inclusion and mainstreaming. Although the U.S. has come a long way from the 1850’s when 60 percent of people living in poor houses would today have been classified as exceptional.

Science Of Death   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Nathaniel Hawthorne was a writer with many successful stories. From reading those stories it is evident that he had an obsession with science and experimenting with people. In his stories you can find characters (or scientists) trying to find answers that typically end in death. This tragic result shows how one of Hawthorne’s main themes is the misuse of science.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The misuse of science that Hawthorne establishes in his stories is assiduous, but is most evident in The Birth Mark. In this short story he describes a couple, Aylmer and Georgiana, who are intertwine with science. For Aylmer believed â€Å"the love of science [could] rival the love of [a] woman in its depth and absorbing energy† because of Aylmer’s love of science. For Georgiana’s beauty â€Å"came so nearly perfect from the hand of Nature† except for a minor blemish. The blemish or defect was in the center of Georgiana’s left cheek, and was the reason that Aylmer thought he needed to experiment on or remove it. Buck is a dog who is part Saint Bernard and part Shephard. Summary:   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Buck is my favorite character of the book. He had such a great life before he was stolen and sold to some very nasty people. Buck was treated very badly and he had to learn how to survive. He didn’t let the people know he was scared. The only way to survive was to listen, watch and learn. Buck wanted to be the leader and fought for what he wanted and he got it.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Buck had a great life living with Judge Miller and his family. He had free run of the place and played with his daughters and hunted with his sons. All the other animals were stuck in the house or behind fences.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  One day a gardener named Manuel, that Buck had trusted, stole Buck and took him to a train station and sold him to people who used large dogs to pull sleds in Alaska. These men were not nice and would beat Buck and the other dogs very badly to let them know who was boss. Buck and the other dogs had no idea what was happening to them. The dogs were put onto the trains and taken to a ship that took them to Alaska where they would be sold again in teams to pull the sleds of people looking for gold and other work.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  When Buck and the other dogs got off the ship, the first thing they saw was white. They didn’t know what it was. It was snow. They learned quickly how hard and scary this would be. Other dogs being used were wild wolves that would tear the new dogs apart if they had the chance.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Buck and eight other dogs were sold to Perrault and Francois. Buck knew he needed to learn how to survive fast. One of the dogs, Spitz, who was the leader was a wolf and very mean. He would bully the other dogs. Buck hated him and one day wanted to take him down to take his place as leader. The dogs had to live through many dangers and survive with little food and sleep.
